A Painter's Insight About Painting

Collectors sometimes ask me: why do you paint? What interests and motivates you as an artist? How do you choose your subjects? I've been thinking about these questions lately, which usually happens when I'm prompted to or when I get a little bored with my work. It happens.

Responses to this line of inquiry are not so simple as one might think because we change and are complex beings. For me, I have always been interested in color, movement and the essence of the subject at hand. Light and a sense of place also hold my attention. Most paintings don't address all of these sublime muses, but the gossamer thread that connects all my work, from past to present, is color and the act of creating itself. It is a joy to be present with the materials: paint, brush, canvas and what my eyes see - to be in the moment, free from the potential shackles of hope and fear.

Artists take risks for a living. Mistakes and virtuosity are our currency. The creative impulse, which we all have, is an act of allowing the space to take risks, explore and let arise a creation based upon a lifetime of honing ones craft.

Cheers,
Philip
