This piece is a breakthrough for me. Like many previous paintings, I used a limited palette to achieve a sense of 'light coming through' and a dream-like trio of islands. The light here is not just literal but also the figurative light of common sense or the light of peace or contentment. It's the light that happens when we slow down and experience a bit of the present moment. An sense of ease, beauty, freshness or the sublime - whatever we may call it. These have been underlying themes in my work for many years.
I have transitioned from acrylics to oils over the last year and have found new freedom to explore and express. It feel that I am more at liberty to not just represent a place or time of day, but to express what is unique to me and common to all. We all express differently yet all search for happiness. Life and art are wonderful, complex yet simple. This is what I try to paint.
This painting is part of my current solo exhibit (up until August 7th) at Courthouse Gallery Fine Art in Ellsworth, Maine . (207)667-6611. www.courthousegallery.com
Cheers,
Phil
